  1. ID:xx Configuring Intractive UNIX and a Motif Window Manager

  4. The following is a procedure for setting up users in the
  5. INTERACTIVE UNIX Operating System.  The INTERACTIVE Menu and Script
  6. selections always offer defaults in [brackets].  When in doubt,
  7. select the default.
  8.  
  9. Adding the UNIX USER - XUSER.
  10.  
  11. Execute: SYSADM
  12. o    From the SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION menu, select: 8 - usermgmt
  13. o    From the USER ADMINISTRATION menu, select: 2 - adduser
  14. o    Prompts for Full NAME - XUSER
  15. o    Prompts for Login ID - xuser
  16. o    Prompts for (system) ID Number [default] (100 if first user,
  17.      sequencially after that): Select the default by pressing
  18.      <Enter>.
  19. o    Prompts for Group number (default 1) [?, q]: Select the
  20.      default (1 is group name "other") by pressing <Enter>.
  21. o    Prompts for Home Directory - [/usr/xuser]: Select the default
  22.      by pressing <Enter>.
  23. o    Prompts to INSTALL [i, e, s, q]: Enter (I)nstall
  24. o    Prompts to give the user a PASSWORD [y, n]: Enter Y
  25. o    Prompts to enter password: x11user
  26. o    As always, prompts to re-enter password: x11user
  27. o    Prompts to add another user [y, n]: Enter N
  28. o    You will return to the USER MANAGEMENT menu
  29. o    Enter <Shift> 6 for ^ to return to SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION MENU

  31. Adding the X WINDOWS USER - XUSER
  32. o    From the SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION menu, select 4 - packagemgmt
  33. o    From the PACKAGE MANAGEMENT menu, select xmgmt (its assigned
  34.      number will vary depending on your installed options).
  35. o    From the X WINDOWS SYSTEM MANAGEMENT menu, select 1 addxuser
  36. o    Prompts to set up new X user? [y, n, ?, q]: Enter Y
  37. o    Prompts to enter User's login ID : xuser.  
  38.      Responds: User can now use the X Windows System
  39. o    Set up another? [y, n, ?, ]: Enter N
  40. o    Prompts to see xmgmt menu [?, ^, q]: Select the default by
  41.      pressing <Enter>.

  43. Creating the DISPLAY SERVER
  44. o    From the X WINDOWS MANAGEMENT menu, select 5 - servermgmt
  45. o    Select 2 - ADD
  46. o    Prompts to enter the name of the server you want to create or
  47.      'q' to quit [q]: Enter Xvga or your desired display server (A
  48.      list is displayed).
  49. o    Prompts: Should server "Xvga" be created [y]: Select the
  50.      default by pressing <Enter>.
  51. o    Respopnds: building ........
  52. o    Prompts to create another X11 server [n]: Select the default
  53.      by pressing <Enter>.

  55. Configuring the DISPLAY SERVER(per system basis, not per user)
  56. o    From the X WINDOWS MANAGEMENT menu, select 2 - configmgmt
  57. o    Select 2 - ADD
  58. o    Enter display number ('l' for list, 'q' for quit) [0]: its a
  59.      good idesa to select 'l' for list to see what's there.  There
  60.      should be none if new install.  
  61. o    Enter display number ('l' for list, 'q' for quit) [0]:
  62.           Select the default by pressing <Enter> or 0. 
  63. o    Prompts: Doesn't exist, creat it? [y]: Select the default by
  64.      pressing <Enter>.
  65. o    Prompts to select resource to add:
  66.                1    display
  67.                2    keyboard
  68.                3    mouse
  69.                4    tablet
  70.           (select 'l' to list,'q' to quit)
  71. o    Enter Selection [display]: Select the default by pressing
  72.      <Enter>.
  73. o    Find your video board or take [VGA] default at end.
  74. o    Prompts to select the number of color planes to use:Enter 3 -
  75.      4 planes (16 color)
  76. o    Prompts for screen size in inches [11x8]: Select the default
  77.      by pressing <Enter>.
  78. o    Prompts for full pathname to screen device [/dev/console]:
  79.      Select the default by pressing <Enter>.
  80. o    You return to the select resource screen, Select the default
  81.      by pressing <Enter>. [keyboard]
  82. o    Prompts for keyboard [AT]: Select the default by pressing
  83.      <Enter>.
  84. o    Prompts for keyboard type [101]: Select the default by
  85.      pressing <Enter>.
  86. o    Prompts for keyboard device name [/dev/console: /dev/vt%02d]:
  87.      Select the default by pressing <Enter>.
  88. o    You return to the select resource screen, Select the
  89.           default by pressing <Enter>. [mouse]
  90. o    Prompts to select your mouse, use your own or select 6 ms
  91.      serial.
  92. o    Prompts for 2 buttons [2]: Select the default by pressing
  93.      <Enter>.
  94. o    Prompts to enter mouse device name [/dev/tty00]: Select the
  95.      default by pressing <Enter>.
  96. o    You return to the select resource screen, enter q for quit.
  97. o    Prompts to save these changes? [y]: Select the default by
  98.      pressing <Enter>.
  99. o    Prompts to enter display number ('l' for list, 'q' fro quit
  100.      [q]: Enter 'l' for list
  101. o    Responds: The following displays are available:
  102.                          0
  103.  
  104. o    Prompts to enter display number ('l' for list ...) [q]: Enter
  105.      0, Your display information is shown with the select resource
  106.      screen.
  107. o    Prompts to enter selection [display]: Enter (Q)uit
  108. o    Prompts to enter operation you want to perform:
  109.      [default: q]: Select the default by pressing <Enter>.
  110. o    Press the RETURN key to see the xmgmt menu [?, ^, q]: <RETURN>
  111. o    Returns to the X WINDOWS SYSTEM MANAGEMENT menu, Enter [Q]uit

  113. Test the XUSER Login
  114. o    Enter <Alt><PrintScr><F1> gets a VT login session, VT1.
  115. o    Test the xuser login.
  116.  
  117. Customization
  118. o    You can build as many display servers as you want.  To select
  119.      one of them:
  120.      o    Modify the .profile file under your login to reflect the
  121.           display ie.  DISPLAY=unix:1 where 1 equals the display
  122.           number.
  123. o    To start the Motif Window Manager when starting X Windows.
  124.      o    create or if one exists, modify the file .xinitrc in your
  125.           HOME directory.
  126.      o    Make the following entries:   
  127.                          xclock &
  128.                          xterm &
  129.                          mwm
  130.      o    Save the file and start X Windows with: xinit
  131.  
  132. Failures
  133. o    When you try to generate a new kernel for your network
  134.      interface card, you may get a device conflict with "gendev". 
  135.      This is a device use by the kernel for device generation on
  136.      IRQ 5.  The fix is to install the High Performance Disk Driver
  137.      to free up IRQ 5.
  138.      o    Enter KCONFIG at the ROOT prompt.  
  139.      o    Select 1 - CONFIGURE A KERNEL
  140.      o    Select 8 - CONFIGURE HIGH PERFORMANCE DISK DRIVER
  141.      o    Make appropriate selections regarding your system
  142.      o    IS THIS THE DESIRED CONFIGURATION ? (y): Select the
  143.           default by pressing <Enter>.
  144.      o    You are returned to the CONFIGURATION MENU, Enter m for
  145.           menu.
  146.      o    You are prompted to save info, Select the default by
  147.           pressing <Enter>.
  148.      o    You are returned to the MAIN MENU, Select 2 - BUILD A
  149.           KERNEL.
